The SSN is a 9-digit personal identification number issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and it is NOT a work authorization. It is used by employees and employers for tax reporting purposes. Once you receive an SSN, the number is yours for life. Make sure you keep your SSN card in a safe place and do not lose your card. Replacing your card is tricky.
Note that WCGS does not issue the SSN. You must apply in-person at one of the Social Security Offices with the documents listed below. The earliest you can apply for an SSN is 30 days before your employment start date. According to the SSA, your SS card should be mailed to you within 10 business days of applying.
If you have been offered an on-campus employment, please submit your request for an SSN support letter, including a copy of employment offer letter on letterhead including:
- Start and end dates
- Number of work hours per week
- Exact work address or location
- Position title and detailed descriptions of the position
