About Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences
The establishment of the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences began in 1912 with a cooperative arrangement between Weill Cornell Medical College (WCM) and the Graduate School of Cornell University. In 1950, Cornell University entered into an agreement with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s research division, the Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI), for the purpose of offering additional opportunities for graduate study toward advanced degrees. In 1952, this alliance was formalized to establish the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences (WCGS), a partnership between WCM and SKI. Today, WCGS offers six PhD programs and nine distinct Masters programs, including an EMBA/MS program.
Additionally, we offer three Tri-Institutional programs that are a collaboration amongst three neighboring institutions, Weill Cornell Medical College, The Rockefeller University, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. These programs are in Chemical Biology, Computational Biology and Medicine, and a joint degree MD/PhD program. All of our programs, housed within the basic sciences, are inextricably linked to clinical issues and translational medicine to better understand human health and disease. Our flexible program-driven doctoral curricula with over 250 course offerings allows students to customize their learning to align with their research interests.
We boast 500+ faculty members, all leaders in their fields, 890+ students and 4000 alumni, many of whom are still actively engaged with our school and students. We encourage students to participate in real world experiences (internships/externships) to enhance their training, provide travel scholarships to present their research findings at scientific meetings, support annual program retreats, and host the annual student-run Vincent du Vigneaud Memorial Research Symposium, beginning in 1981, where students from all years of study present their research to one another.
