The clinical genomics and molecular hematopathology laboratories are clinical laboratories whose main purpose is characterization of individual patients' solid tumors and hematologic malignancies to optimize clinical management. Research and development that occurs in our laboratories focuses on validation and implementation of clinical assays.
Research

My research focuses on the evaluation, development, validation, and clinical implementation of molecular diagnostics to enhance precision oncology. In solid tumors, rapid and accurate biomarker detection is critical for optimal personalized therapy selection. Selected contributions in this area include studies on rapid identification of IDH1/2 mutational status in gliomas (PMID: 38796421), accurate determination of MET copy number status in solid tumors including non-small cell lung cancer (PMID: 36044468), and evaluation of methodologies for determining Her2/neu status in breast cancer (PMID: 28340220).

A major focus of my scholarly contribution has been the clinical detection of oncogenic fusions in solid tumors, particularly NTRK fusions, rare but actionable drivers seen across many tumor types. In my work, I have characterized assay performance and clinical implications of various fusion detection methodologies (PMID: 31375766; PMID: 31738428; PMID: 31196931; PMID: 31871300; PMID: 34756276). More recently, I led a comparative evaluation of various NGS assays in the Clinical Genomics Laboratory for their ability to detect oncogenic fusions in non-small cell lung cancer (PMID: 40122160), and this work led to modification of our clinical NSCLC testing algorithm.

Biography

James P. Solomon, MD, PhD is the Division Director of Genomic Pathology and an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. He trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of California, San Diego and completed fellowships in Oncologic Surgical Pathology and Molecular Genetic Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before joining Weill Cornell Medicine in July 2019. Dr. Solomon currently directs the Clinical Genomics and Molecular Hematopathology Laboratories, specializing in next-generation sequencing and molecular diagnostics for cancer. His clinical and research focus is comprehensive genomic profiling of solid tumors, including oncogenic fusion detection.
