Dr. Jung’s current research largely centers on the quality of care provided by physicians and advanced practitioners who practice almost exclusively in nursing homes, often referred to as “SNFists.” She is also researching the relationship between increases in physician reimbursements and the quality of care provided to nursing home residents.
Dr. Jung’s research focuses primarily on the organization of clinical care in nursing homes as well as the impact of Medicare and Medicaid policies on the quality of post-acute and long-term care.
Dr. Jung researches the organizational structure of health care delivery in nursing homes. She is the recipient of a Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award, which employs mixed methods to evaluate the quality of care provided by clinicians who primarily practice in nursing homes. She is also the principal investigator of an (R01) award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) that examines whether SNFists improve functional outcomes and reduce the health care use of post-acute patients. Additionally, Dr. Jung is the principal investigator of an NIA-funded (R01) project that examines physicians’ responses to financial incentives. The study evaluates the relationship between higher primary care reimbursements and the quality of care provided to post-acute patients with dementia in nursing homes. Since 2020, Dr. Jung has made significant contributions to the literature by examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nursing home residents and staff. Her work includes some of the first studies identifying facility characteristics associated with the morbidity and mortality of residents during the pandemic.
Biography
Dr. Hye-Young (“Arian”) Jung is an associate professor of population health sciences in the Division of Health Policy and Economics in the Department of Population Health Sciences. Prior to joining the faculty at WCM, she completed her PhD at Brown University in health services research with a concentration in health economics. Dr. Jung founded the Master of Science in Health Policy and Economics program at WCM in 2015 and served as its director until 2020.
