Michael G Stewart
Chair of Otolaryngology
Dr. Stewart's research interest is in outcomes and quality of life research, and he has received research funding from the NIH and AHRQ among others. Dr. Stewart has developed and validated patient-based outcomes measures, including the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) index, which has been translated into 17 languages and cited more than 700 times.
Dr. Stewart is the author of 2 textbooks, and more than 30 book chapters and 130 peer-reviewed publications. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of The Laryngoscope journal and he also served as Associate Editor and on the Editorial Boards of several other journals. Because of administrative and clinical responsibilities, he is not currently doing active research, although he collaborates frequently with colleagues.
Biography
Dr. Stewart is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Otolaryngologist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He serves as Senior Associate Dean for International Affairs and Affiliations of the Medical College. Previously, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs from 2010-17, and again from 2020-21. He received a B.E. degree summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University, and an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed residency training at Baylor College of Medicine at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, and received his M.P.H. degree from the University of Texas School of Public Health, Houston.
Dr. Stewart is a former Director and the Past-President of the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. He was an elected member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Oto-HNS from 2011-15 and also a Past-President of other national societies. He is currently serving in his second term as the Executive Vice President of the American Rhinologic Society. Dr. Stewart teaches a course on Global Perspectives in Healthcare for the Executive MBA/MS program in Healthcare Leadership, a joint program between Weill Cornell Medicine and the SC Johnson School of Business at Cornell University.
Distinctions:
Dr. Stewart has received many awards and honors, including two Distinguished Service Awards from the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and Presidential and Vice Presidential Citations from four different national societies. He has won several teaching awards at both Baylor College of Medicine and Weill Cornell Medicine. He has been a visiting professor at more than 40 institutions, and has given more than 500 invited lectures, both nationally and internationally.
